In the Hyla columbiana group, according to Duellman and Trueb, 1983, in Rhodin and Miyata (eds.), Adv. Herpetol. Evol. Biol.: 33–51, but this was disputed by Kaplan, 1991, J. Herpetol., 25: 316, on evidential grounds. Kaplan, 1999, Rev. Acad. Colomb. Cienc. Exact. Fis. Nat., 23: 299–302, considered Hyla praestans to be the sister taxon of the Hyla columbiana group. In the Dendropsophus garagoensis group of Faivovich, Haddad, Garcia, Frost, Campbell, and Wheeler, 2005, Bull. Am. Mus. Nat. Hist., 294: 90–91.
