Distribution

In Mexico in the southern Sierra Madre Occidental from Durango, southern Sinaloa and Nayarit, along the southern edge of the Mexican Plateau from Michoacán to Zitacuaro and the Sierra de Coalcomán in southern Michoacán. Occurring at 1280–2550 m most commonly in pine-oak forests, but also pine and pine-fir forests.

Am. J. Herpetol., 37: 30–40, excluded the former populations from the states of México and Morelos, naming these as Sarcohyla gretae.
