Leptodactylus payaya Magalhães, Lyra, Carvalho, Baldo, Brusquetti, Burella, Colli, Gehara, Giaretta, Haddad, Langone, López, Napoli, Santana, de Sá, and Garda, 2020, Herpetol. Monogr., 34: 163. Holotype: CHUFPB 28187, by original designation. Type locality: "Chapada Diamantina, Jacobina municipality, Bahia state, Brazil (11°9′38.66″S, 40°32′6.60″W; 467-m elevation)."

Distribution

Endemic to Brazil in open fields of the Chapada Diamantina mountain range and surrounding areas in Bahia state, east of the São Francisco River, with single records west of this river in Côcos municipality, Bahia and in Caatinga/Atlantic Forest ecotonal areas from Minas Gerais and Pernambuco states, Brazil.

In the Leptodactylus latrans group, formerly confused with Leptodactylus latrans, according to the original publication, where the morphology, calls, and molecular relationships are outlined. Magalhães, Camurugi, Lyra, Baldo, Gehara, Haddad, and Garda, 2022, Mol. Phylogenet. Evol., 169 (107398): 1–15, reported on systematics, evolutionary history, and range.
