Mantidactylus ceratophrys Ahl, 1929 "1928", Mitt. Zool. Mus. Berlin, 14: 475. Syntypes: ZMB (6 specimens) unnumbered according to the original publication; these lost according to Guibé, 1978, Bonn. Zool. Monogr., 11: 25; not lost and ZMB 10443–44, 50401–02 according to Vences and Glaw, 2001, Alytes, 19: 113, who designated ZMB 10443 as lectotype. Type locality: "Betsileo (Madagascar)".

Removed from the synonymy of Gephyromantis aspera by Vences, Köhler, Pabijan, Bletz, Gehring, Hawlitschek, Rakotoarison, Ratsoavina, Andreone, Crottini, and Glaw, 2017, Salamandra, 53: 87, where it had been placed by Guibé, 1978, Bonn. Zool. Monogr., 11: 25.
