Prior to the revision of Glaw and Vences, 2006, Organisms Divers. Evol., 6: 236-253, in the Mantidactylus (Gephyromantis) redimitus group of Dubois, 1992, Bull. Mens. Soc. Linn. Lyon, 61: 312. Rediagnosed and discussed by Vences, Glaw, and Andreone, 1997, Alytes, 14: 130-146, who considered it in the Mantidactylus (Gephyromantis) boulengeri group. Vences and Glaw, 2002, Herpetol. Rev., 33: 62, discussed erroneous records of this species and its distributional range. Glaw and Vences, 2007, Field Guide Amph. Rept. Madagascar, Ed. 3: 212-213, provided an account. See photograph, map, description of geographic range and habitat, and conservation status (as Mantidactylus klemmeri) in Stuart, Hoffmann, Chanson, Cox, Berridge, Ramani, and Young, 2008, Threatened Amph. World: 430. See comment under Gephyromantis regarding the removal of this taxon from the subgenus Gephyromantis and phylogenetic proximity to the subgenus Laurentomantis. Scherz, Hawlitschek, Razafindraibe, Megson, Ratsoavina, Rakotoarison, Bletz, Glaw, and Vences, 2018, Zoosyst. Evol., 94: 247–261 discussed the subgeneric placement of Gephyromantis klemmeri, and concluded that it could belong in Laurentomantis, be assigned to its own subgenus, or be included in a more inclusive Laurentomantis that would subsume Vatomantis, but forestalled placement of it until further taxonomic and phylogenetic work has been undertaken.
