Leptolalax sungi Lathrop, Murphy, Orlov, and Ho, 1998, Amphibia-Reptilia, 19: 254. Holotype: ROM 28474, by original designation. Type locality: "a stream on the east side of the village of Tam Dao (21° 27′ 31″ N; 105° 38′ 61″ E), elevation 925 m, Vinh Phu Province, Vietnam".

Northern Vietnam in the provinces of Vinh Phuc, Van Yen, Lao Cai, Dien Bien, Phu Tho, Son La, and Tuyen Quang); southern Guangxi, China, near the extreme northeastern Vietnam border.

Rev., 38: 108, provided a record from Lao Cai Province, Vietnam, and briefly discussed the range. Fei, Hu, Ye, and Huang, 2009, Fauna Sinica, Amph. 2: 299-304, provided an account and spot map (as Paramegophrys sangi [sic]) and reported the species for Guangxi, China. Fei, Ye, and Jiang, 2010, Colored Atlas of Chinese Amph.: 175, provided a brief account (as Paramegophrys sangi) including photographs of specimens and habitat. Ohler, Wollenberg, Grosjean, Hendrix, Vences, Ziegler, and Dubois, 2011, Zootaxa, 3147: 1-83, characterized the species comparatively. Fei, Ye, and Jiang, 2012, Colored Atlas Chinese Amph.
