Confused with Cophixalus ornatus prior to a study of its molecular and morphological geographic variation, and forming the sister taxon of Cophixalus hinchinbrookensis, according to the original publication. Cutajar, Portway, Gillard, and Rowley, 2022, Tech. Rep. Aust. Mus. Online, 36: 8, provided a polygon distribution map.
