Cophixalus variabilis Kraus and Allison, 2006, Herpetologica, 62: 203. Holotype: BPBM 20165, by original designation. Type locality: "SE slope Mt Pekopekowana, 10.2851° S, 150.1822° E (WGS 84), 330 m, Milne Bay Province, Papua New Guinea". Junior secondary homonym of Sphenophryne variabilis Boulenger, 1896, when both are in Asterophrys

Distribution

Southeastern Milne Bay Province, including the Cloudy Mountains (700-1000 m), Owen Stanley Mountains (300-600 m), Ferguson Island (300-1500 m), and Normanby Island (sea level); extending onto the northern versant of the Owen Stanley Mountains in Central Province.
