Microhyla karunaratnei Fernando and Siriwardhane, 1996, J. South Asian Nat. Hist., 2: 135. Holotype: AMS R 148277, by original designation. Type locality: "Morningside Estate, Sinharaja World Heritage Site: 1 km from research station at edge of a shallow pond (6° 24′ N, 80° 37′ E)", Sri Lanka.

Wet forest below 1100 m elevation in southern Sri Lanka (Morningside Forest Reserve).

Zool., Senckenberg, 69: 1–71, who summarized the literature. Gorin, Solovyeva, Hasan, Okamiya, Karunarathna, Pawangkhanant, de Silva, Juthong, Milto, Nguyen, Suwannapoom, Haas, Bickford, Das, and Poyarkov, 2020, PeerJ, 8 (e9411): 1–47, placed this species in their Microhyla superciliaris group.
