Frost, Grant, Faivovich, Bain, Haas, Haddad, de Sá, Channing, Wilkinson, Donnellan, Raxworthy, Campbell, Blotto, Moler, Drewes, Nussbaum, Lynch, Green, and Wheeler, 2006, Bull. Am. Mus. Nat. Hist., 297, redelimited the taxon and considered it to be distantly related to Ranidae, with which it had formerly been confused. Bossuyt, Brown, Hillis, Cannatella, and Milinkovitch, 2006, Syst. Biol., 55: 579–594, provided results that corroborates the monophyly of Nyctibatrachidae (sensu Frost et al., 2006). Pyron and Wiens, 2011, Mol. Phylogenet. Evol., 61: 543–583, confirmed the monophyly of the family and its position as the sister taxon of Ceratobatrachidae + "Ingerana" baluensis. Bossuyt and Roelants, 2009, in Hedges and Kumar (eds.), Timetree of Life: 357–364, considered this taxon a distinct family based on its Mesozoic origin. Blackburn and Wake, 2011, In Zhang (ed.), Zootaxa, 3148: 39–55, briefly reviewed the taxonomic history of this taxon. Van Bocxlaer, Biju, Willaert, Giri, Shouche, and Bossuyt, 2012, Mol. Phylogenet. Evol., 62: 839–847, reported on the molecular phylogenetics and biogeography of the family. Vitt and Caldwell, 2014, Herpetology, 4th Ed., provided a summary of life history, diagnosis, and taxonomy. Senevirathne, Samarawickrama, Wijayathilaka, Manamendra-Arachchi, Bowatte, Samarawickrama, and Meegaskumbura, 2018, Zootaxa, 4461: 524, provided a ML tree of 16S for the species in the family. Rev., Beijing, 6: 10–14, reported on phylogenetics and biogeography as an element of Natatanura. Vijayakumar, Pyron, Dinesh, Torsekar, Srikanthan, Swamy, Stanley, Blackburn, and Shanker, 2019, PeerJ, 7(e6457): 1–28, revised the family, with special reference to the subfamilies [Astrobatrachinae + (Lankanectinae + Nyctibatrachinae)], discussing both the molecular and morphological evidence in support of this taxonomy.
