Tympanoceros newtonii Barboza du Bocage, 1895, J. Sci. Math. Phys. Nat., Lisboa, Ser. 2, 3 (12): 270. Holotype: Not found in the MBL by Perret, 1976, Arq. Mus. Bocage, Ser. 2, 6: 21, so presumably lost at that time; should it have been in MBL it would have been destroyed in 1978 fire. MNCN 48728 designated neotype by Sánchez-Vialas, Calvo-Revuelta, Castroviejo-Fisher, and De la Riva, 2018, ZooKeys, 765: 72. Type locality: "L'ile de Fernão do Po dans le golfe de Guiné". Neotype from "Chopepe creek at its confluence with Río Osa (3°14'52.19"N, 8°32'23.77"E, 27 m a.s.l.), Bioko, Equatorial Guinea".

Removed from the synonymy of Petropedetes johnstoni by Sánchez-Vialas, Calvo-Revuelta, Castroviejo-Fisher, and De la Riva, 2018, ZooKeys, 765: 72, where it had been placed by Barej, Rödel, Gonwouo, Pauwels, Böhme, and Schmitz, 2010, Zootaxa, 2340: 4. The tadpole of Petropedetes newtonii was described by Barej, Rödel, Gonwouo, Pauwels, Böhme, and Schmitz, 2010, Zootaxa, 2340: 5, (as Petropedetes johnstoni) based on a specimen from Musola, Bioko.
