Confused with Phrynobatrachus dispar prior to its naming according to the original publication. Frétey, 2008, Alytes, 25: 99-172, summarized the literature. In species group B of Zimkus, Rödel, and Hillers, 2010, Mol. Phylogenet. Evol., 55: 883-900. Channing and Rödel, 2019, Field Guide Frogs & Other Amph. Afr.: 304–305, provided a brief account, photograph, and range map. Bell, Ceríaco, Scheinberg, and Drewes, 2022, in Ceríaco et al. (eds.), Biodiversity Gulf Guinea Islands: 494–495, summarized the literature and systematics of the species. Ceríaco, Marques, Sousa, Veríssimo, Beja, and Ferreira, 2023, ZooKeys, 1168: 41–75, included this species in a report, key, and DNA barcode reference library for the amphibians of São Tomé and Príncipe. Sousa, Santos, Parrinha, Barbosa, Marques, Passos, and Ceríaco, 2026, Nat. Hist. Coll. Mus., 3(e184711): 1–63, discussed collecting effort on São Thome I., and nearby islands, and provided a grid map of this species.
