Coastal northeastern Tanzania and adjacent southwestern coastal Kenya; isolated populations in coastal south-central Mozambique and Tshaneni, Eswatini.

Removed from the synonymy of Pyxicephalus edulis by Scott, Visser, Yetman, and Oliver, 2013, Zootaxa, 3599: 201-228. Spawls, Wasonga, and Drewes, 2019, Amph. Kenya: 35, provided a range map for Kenya, photograph, and brief characterization. Du Preez and Carruthers, 2017, Frogs S. Afr., Compl. Guide: 442–443, provided an account, including a polygon range map, photograph, identification features, adult and larval morphology, habitat, and call. Channing and Rödel, 2019, Field Guide Frogs & Other Amph. Afr.: 376–377, provided a brief account, photograph, and range map.
