Quah, Grismer, Wood, Lim, Yambun Imbun, and Anuar, 2021, Vert. Zool., Senckenberg, 71: 75–99, recovered this species to be the sister of Abavorana nazgul + Abavorana luctuosa and resurrected the name from the synonymy of Abavorana luctuosa, with which it was previously confused. Ujang, Llano-Sánchez, Maiwald, and Das, 2021, Herpetol. Rev., 52: 341, provided a record from Bukit Baka Raya National Park, Melawi Regency, Kalimantan Province (Borneo), Indonesia.
