Amolops daorum (Bain, Lathrop, Murphy, Orlov, and Ho, 2003)
Rana (Odorrana) daorum Bain, Lathrop, Murphy, Orlov, and Ho, 2003, Am. Mus. Novit., 3417: 38. Holotype: ROM 26381, by original designation. Type locality: "approximately 5 km NW of Sa Pa village, near O Qui Ho Pass, Lao Cai Province, Vietnam (22° 22′ 09″ N, 103° 50′ 14″ E, elevation 1400 m)". Synonymy with Amolops mengyangensis by Ohler, 2007, Alytes, 25: 59 (see comment).
Odorrana daorum — Chen, Murphy, Lathrop, Ngo, Orlov, Ho, and Somorjai, 2005, Herpetol. J., 15: 239; Che, Pang, Zhao, Wu, Zhao, and Zhang, 2007, Mol. Phylogenet. Evol., 43: 1-13; by implication; Cai, Che, Pang, Zhao, and Zhang, 2007, Zootaxa, 1531: 49-55. Based on specimens of Odorrana hmongorum, see comment.
Amolops daorum — Stuart, 2008, Mol. Phylogenet. Evol., 46: 51; Stuart, Bain, Phimmachak, and Spence, 2010, Herpetologica, 66: 63.
English Names
Dao Frog (Nguyen, Ho, and Nguyen, 2005, Checklist Amph. Rept. Vietnam: 27).
Distribution
Known only from the vicinity of Sa Pa, Lao Cai Province, Vietnam (on the Yunnan border of China) and Hong Kong (see comment); Huaphahn Province, Laos; presumably more widespread in intervening areas.
Comment
Stuart, 2005, Herpetol. Rev., 36: 477, provided specific localities of Rana daorum for Laos. Bain, Stuart, and Orlov, 2006, Copeia, 2006: 57, provided the record of Rana daorum from Huaphan Province, Laos, and doubted the Hong Kong record pending securing of specimens. Ohler, 2007, Alytes, 25: 55-74, regarded this taxon as a synonym of Amolops mengyangensis. Cai, Che, Pang, Zhao, and Zhang, 2007, Zootaxa, 1531: 49-55, placed Rana daorum in Odorrana, but Stuart, 2008, Mol. Phylogenet. Evol., 46: 51, regarded the species as a member of Amolops, and Stuart, Bain, Phimmachak, and Spence, 2010, Herpetologica, 66: 63, discussed the issue specifically, suggesting the the mtDNA used in the Chen et al., (2005) study was from a specimen of Odorrana hmongorum, this Genbank sequence used by Che et al. (2007) and Cai et al. (2007), and returned Rana daorum to Amolops, in the Amolops monticola group. Stuart et al. (2010) also discussed and rejected the synonymy of Amolops daorum with Amolops mengyangensis. See comments by Biju, Mahony, and Kamei, 2010, Zootaxa, 2408: 44, regarding problems regarding the synonymy of Amolops daorum and Amolops mengyangensis. In the Amolops monticola group of Wu, Yan, Stuart, Prendini, Suwannapoom, Dahn, Zhang, Cai, Xu, Jiang, Chen, Lemmon, Lemmon, Raxworthy, Orlov, Murphy, and Che, 2020, Mol. Phylogenet. Evol., 144 (106701): 1–13, who discussed molecular phylogenetics.
