Rana (Papurana) aurata Günther, 2003, Mitt. Mus. Naturkd. Berlin, Zool., 79: 208. Holotype: ZMB 58694, by original designation. Type locality: "at 54 km along the Nabire-Mapia road, about 30 km SE of Nabire, 750 m a.s.l., 3° 29′ 517″ S, 135° 43′ 913″ E., Papua, Province of Indonesia". Note that the original latitude and longitudes are impossible and therefore in error and should be corrected to 3° 29.517′ S, 135° 43.913′ E (A. Allison, personal communication).

Distribution

Vicinity of the Biological State of Pusppenssat, ca. 30 km southeast of Nabire, Papua (New Guinea), Indonesia; also reported several localities on the Vogelkop Peninsula (see comment).

Most similar to Rana volkerjane according to the original publication. Menzies, 2006, Frogs New Guinea & Solomon Is.: 70, provided a brief account. Oliver, Davie-Rieck, Ramdani, Dashper, Kusuma, Lee, Rittmeyer, Clancy, Hamidy, Thompson, Fouquet, Ferreira, and Richards, 2025, Pacific Conserv. Biol., 31(PC24063): 1–12, as part of a larger discussion of the role of citizen science in documenting species ranges in Melanesia suggested that this name represents a species complex and noted that iNaturalist provided records from the Vogelkop Peninsula, Papua, Indonesia,
