Syntypes: BMNH (4 specimens), according to the original publication, these including 1947.2.3.47 (formerly 1895.11.79), other BMNH syntypes not traced; also including (apparently in error) MNHNP 1889.235–237 and 1889.239–41 (6 specimens), according to Guibé, 1950 "1948", Cat. Types Amph. Mus. Natl. Hist. Nat.: 42. Type locality: "Mount Kina Baloo", Sabah. Malaysia (Borneo); with reference to museum records, given as "Melangkap, a village on the western slope of Mt Kinabalu" by Shimada, Matsui, Yambun Imbun, and Sudin, 2011, Zool. J. Linn. Soc., 161: 178.

Distribution

Western Sabah (Malaysia), Bintulu Division, Sarawak (Malaysia) and northern Kalimantan (Borneo), Indonesia, below 1300 m elevation.

Removed from the synonymy of Meristogenys jerboa by Inger and Gritis, 1983, Fieldiana, Zool., N.S., 19: 8, where it had been placed by XXX. Distinctiveness from Rana jerboa Günther defended by Boulenger, 1891, Ann. Mag. Nat. Hist., Ser. 6, 7: 344. See account by Boulenger, 1920, Rec. Indian Mus., 20: 195. Inger and Tan, 1996, Raffles Bull. Zool., 44: 561, did not include Sarawak in the distribution. Malkmus, Manthey, Vogel, Hoffmann, and Kosuch, 2002, Amph. Rept. Mount Kinabalu: 153–154, provided an account. Shimada, Matsui, Sudin, and Mohamed, 2007, Zool. J. Linn. Soc., 151: 173–189, suggested that a cryptic species may exist in sympatry with this species in Sabah, Malaysia. See statement of geographic range, habitat, and conservation status (in the sense of including Meristogenys stigmachilus and Meristogenys stenocephalus) in Stuart, Hoffmann, Chanson, Cox, Berridge, Ramani, and Young, 2008, Threatened Amph. World: 630. Inger and Stuebing, 2009, Raffles Bull. Zool., 57: 533, provided the first record from Sarawak and provided additional descriptive data.
