Sci., Tokyo, 11: 753–757, discussed the relationships of this species with Rana ornativentris, Rana pirica, Rana tagoi, and Rana japonica. Biol. Hiroshima Univ., 9: 1–52, reported on intraspecific variation of allozymes and large difference between Rana tagoi yakushimensis and Rana tagoi tagoi. Tanaka, Matsui, and Takenaka, 1996, Biochem. Syst. Ecol., 24: 299–307, suggested that Rana tagoi okiensis was more distantly related to other populations assigned to Rana tagoi than was Rana sakuraii. Highton, 2000, in Bruce et al., Biol. Plethodontid Salamanders: 235, suggested that their data supported the recognition of three species. Maeda and Matsui, 1990, Frogs Toads Japan, Ed. 2: 56–67, provided accounts. Goris and Maeda, 2004, Guide Amph. Rept. Japan: 100–105, provided account, maps, and photographs. Ryuzaki, Nishioka, and Kawamura, 2006, Cytogenet. Genome Res., 114: 56–65, reported mutually incompatible karyotypes in this species, a population of n=28 in the Chausu mountain population of Nagano Prefecture, and n=26 elsewhere in Japan, suggesting that the Chausu mountain population should be recognized as a distinct species (DRF). Eto, Matsui, Sugahara, and Tanaka-Ueno, 2012, Zool. Sci., Tokyo, 29: 662–671, suggested on the basis of mtDNA analysis that this taxon is composed of multiple cryptic species. Eto and Matsui, 2014, Mol. Phylogenet. Evol., 79: 231–239, reported on molecular phylogenetics and noted substantial mtDNA introgression with populations of its sister species, Rana sakuraii, which had confounded previous attempts at recovering phylogeny based only on mtDNA trees. They also noted that Rana tagoi is composed of multiple lineages forming a paraphyletic series with respect to Rana sakuraii, for which some available names should be evaluated. Shimada, Sanda, and Eto, 2021, Curr. Herpetol., Kyoto, 40: 54–65, reported on the advertisement call at the type locality. Eto and Matsui, 2023, Curr. Herpetol., Kyoto, 42: 190–209, removed Rana okiensis and Rana yakushimensis from the synonymy of Rana tagoi on the basis of mtDNA and comparative morphology. Tokita, Iizuka, and Eto, 2023, Herpetol. Notes, 16: 761–771, compared Rana sakuraii and Rana tagoi morphmetrically.
