Ixalus adspersus Günther, 1872, Ann. Mag. Nat. Hist., Ser. 4, 9: 87. Holotype: BMNH 1947.2.26.89 (formerly 1871.12.14.36) according to Dutta, 1997, Amph. India Sri Lanka: 73. Type locality: "Peradeniya ... collected chiefly in the neighbourhood of the locality named . . . . Ceylon", Sri Lanka. Manamendra-Arachchi and Pethiyagoda, 2005, Raffles Bull. Zool., Suppl., 12: 205, noted the type locality as "Nuwara Eliya, a resort town among mountains rising to 1,700–2,500 m".

Known only from the type locality in central Sri Lanka. See comment.

Removed from the synonymy of Philautus variabilis by Inger, 1985, in Frost (ed.), Amph. Species World: 526, where it had been placed by Kirtisinghe, 1957, Amph. Ceylon: 74. This arrangement was followed tentatively by Dutta, 1997, Amph. India Sri Lanka: 73, Dutta, 1997, Amph. India Sri Lanka: 73, and Bossuyt and Dubois, 2001, Zeylanica, 6: 24. Manamendra-Arachchi and Pethiyagoda, 2005, Raffles Bull. Zool., Suppl., 12: 202–205, provided an account and noted this species as extinct. Dutta, 1997, Amph. India Sri Lanka: 174, and Biju, 2001, Occas. Publ. Indian Soc. Conserv. Biol., 1: 19, considered records for Karnataka, India, to be erroneous.
