Polypedates stellata Kelaart, 1853, Prodr. Faunae Zeylan., 1: 194. Holotype: Not stated or known to exist; possibly in BMNH. Type locality: "Newera-Ellia, Ceylon". Rendered as "Nuwara Eliya (06 57 N, 80 47 E), Sri Lanka by Bossuyt and Dubois, 2001, Zeylanica, 6: 16.

Distribution

Known only from the type locality (Nuwara Eliya) and from the Peak Wilderness, Sbaragamuwa Province, Sri Lanka.

Comment

Considered a nomen dubium by Boulenger, 1882, Cat. Batr. Sal. Coll. Brit. Mus., Ed. 2: 73; this taxon was recognized by Bossuyt and Dubois, 2001, Zeylanica, 6: 17, who considered it likely that this name applies to one of the species of Kirtixalus in Sri Lanka, but that application would have to await a neotype designation. Manamendra-Arachchi and Pethiyagoda, 2005, Raffles Bull. Zool., Suppl., 12: 220-222, provided an account and noted this species to be extinct. See map, description of geographic range and habitat, and conservation status in Stuart, Hoffmann, Chanson, Cox, Berridge, Ramani, and Young, 2008, Threatened Amph. World: 141, who regarded the species as extinct. Wickramasinghe, Vidanapathirana, Airyarathne, Rajeev, Chanaka, Pastorini, Chathuranga, and Wickramasinghe, 2013, Zootaxa, 3620: 112-128, reported the species from the Peak Wilderness, Ratnapura District, Sabaragamuwa Province, Sri Lanka.
