The sister taxon of a group composed of Ghatixalus, Feihyla, Taruga, and Polypedates, according to the original publication. Mahony, Kamei, Brown, and Chan, 2024, Vert. Zool., Senckenberg, 74: 253, argued that recognition of nominal Tamixalus from Rhacophorus (mentioning low numbers of sequences employed within comparative studies but without discussing taxon sampling) might be wrong and returned it to the synonymy of Gracixalus.
