Philautus petilus Stuart and Heatwole, 2004, Asiat. Herpetol. Res., 10: 17. Holotype: FMNH 257902, by original designation. Type locality: "Phou Dendin National Biodiversity Conservation Area, Phongsaly District, Phongsaly Province, Laos, 22° 05′ 44″ N 102° 08′ 10″ E, at 600 m elevation".

Distribution
Known from Muong Nhe Nature Reserve, Dien Bien Province, northwestern Vietnam, Phongsaly and Vietiane Provinces, northern Laos, near the Vietnam and China borders; Na Haeo Distrit, Loei Province, northeastern Thailand; presumably to be found in adjacent Yunnan, China.

See comments by Stuart, Phimmachak, Seateun, and Sheridan, 2013, Zootaxa, 3745: 80-81. Nguyen, Le, Nguyen, Matsui, and Nguyen, 2014, Curr. Herpetol., Kyoto, 33: 112–120, reported the species in Vietnam and verified this species placement in Theloderma and closely related to Theloderma asperum. In the subgenus Theloderma, Theloderma asperum species group of Poyarkov, Orlov, Moiseeva, Pawangkhanant, Ruangsuwan, Vassilieva, Galoyan, Nguyen, and Gogoleva, 2015, Russ. J. Herpetol., 22: 276. Hou, Yu, Chen, Liao, Zhang, Chen, Li, and Orlov, 2017, Russ. J. Herpetol., 24: 121, provided a dot map of known localities. Niyomwan, Srisom, and Pawangkhanant, 2019, Field Guide Amph. Thailand: 452–453, provided a brief account (description, photographs, habitat, and range) for Thailand (in Thai). Phusaensri, Kaewboribut, Phummisuttigoon, Kaewtongkum, Youjaroen, Tongpun, Khongcharoensuk, Nurngsomsri, Chuaynkern, Duengkae, and Chuaynkern, Alytes, 36: 289–299, provided a record for Huay Tap Ko Sod of Baan Huay Nam Phak, Na Haeo District, Loei Province, in northeastern Thailand. Nguyen, Brakels, Maury, Sudavanh, Pawangkhanant, Idiiatullina, Lorphengsy, Inkhavilay, Suwannapoom, and Poyarkov, 2020, Amph. Rept. Conserv., 14 (2: e248): 218–249, briefly discussed the natural history and range and provided a record from Vientiane Province, Laos.
