Lynch, 1978, Occas. Pap. Mus. Nat. Hist. Univ. Kansas, 72: 1-5, considered this genus to be the sister-taxon of Atelognathus. Diaz, Valencia, and Sallaberry-Ayerza, 1983, Copeia, 1983: 30-37, suggested a relationship to Telmatobius and Alsodes. Correa-Quezada, Veloso, Iturra-Constant, and Méndez-Torres, 2006, Rev. Chilena Hist. Nat., 79: 435-450, suggested on the basis of 12S and 16S mtDNA that Insuetophrynus is closely related to Rhinoderma. Rabanal and Formas, 2009, Zootaxa, 2116: 59-67, discussed the larval morphology.
