Bolitoglossa cataguana Townsend, Butler, Wilson, and Austin, 2009, Salamandra, 45: 96. Holotype: UF 151786, by original designation. Type locality: "Honduras, Departamento de Francisco Morazán, Municipio de Marale, Parque Nacional Montaña de Yoro, trail above Quebrada Cataguana (15° 01′ N 87° 06′ W), 1850 m elevation".

In the Bolitoglossa dunni group according to the original publication. Köhler, 2011, Amph. Cent. Am.: 40–69, compared this species with others from Central America, provided a map, photograph, and brief characterization. Raffaëlli, 2013, Urodeles du Monde, 2nd ed.: 355, provided a brief account, photograph, and range map. Raffaëlli, 2022, Salamanders & Newts of the World: 778–779, provided an account summarizing systematics, life history, population status, and distribution (including a polygon map).
