Bolitoglossa indio Sunyer, Lotzkat, Hertz, Wake, Aléman, Robleto, and Köhler, 2008, Senckenb. Biol., 88: 320. Holotype: SMF 85867, by original designation. Type locality: "Dos Bocas del Río Indio (11° 2′ 54.8″ N, 83° 52′ 48.4″ W), 25 m elevation, Departamento de Río San Juan, Nicaragua".

Common Names

Rio Indio Mushroomtongue Salamander (Raffaëlli, 2022, Salamanders & Newts of the World: 787).

Distribution

Known only from the type locality: Dos Bocas del Río Indio, Departamento de Río San Juan, northeastern Nicaragua, 25 m elevation; also reported 87 km from the type locality as Boca de Arenal, Cantón de San Carlos, Alajuela, Costa Rica, 68 m elevation.

Comment

Likely a member of the subgenus Bolitoglossa according to the original publication. See comments by Sunyer, Páiz, Dehling, and Köhler, 2009, Herpetol. Notes, 2: 189-202. Köhler, 2011, Amph. Cent. Am.: 40–69, compared this species with others from Central America and provided a map and photograph. Sunyer, Wake, and Obando, 2012, Herpetol. Rev., 43: 560, reported the species from Boca de Arenal, Cantón de San Carlos, Alajuela, Costa Rica, 68 m elevation. Raffaëlli, 2013, Urodeles du Monde, 2nd ed.: 358–359, provided a brief account, photograph, and range map. Raffaëlli, 2022, Salamanders & Newts of the World: 787–788, provided an account summarizing systematics, life history, population status, and distribution (including a polygon map).
