Comment

Formerly in the Bolitoglossa lignicolor group; this species was reassigned to the Bolitoglossa mexicana group by García-París, Parra-Olea, and Wake, 2000, in Bruce et al., Biol. Plethodontid Salamanders: 199–214. In the subgenus Bolitoglossa of Parra-Olea, García-París, and Wake, 2004, Biol. J. Linn. Soc., 81: 335, formerly the Bolitoglossa mexicana group. Specimens previously referred to this species from Atlantic slope Costa Rica are assignable to Bolitoglossa alvaradoi; see account by Savage, 2002, Amph. Rept. Costa Rica: 133–134. García-París, Parra-Olea, Brame, and Wake, 2002, Rev. Esp. Herpetol., 16: 49, considered this species to be in polytomy with Bolitoglossa odonnelli, Bolitoglossa alberchi, and a group composed of Bolitoglossa striatula, Bolitoglossa mombachoensis, Bolitoglossa yucatana, and Bolitoglossa mexicanaRaffaëlli, 2013, Urodeles du Monde, 2nd ed.: 311, provided a brief account, photograph, and map. See photograph, map, description of geographic range and habitat, and conservation status in Stuart, Hoffmann, Chanson, Cox, Berridge, Ramani, and Young, 2008, Threatened Amph. World: 560. Köhler, Sunyer, Ponce, and Batista, 2008, Senckenb. Biol., 88: 329–333, provided the upper elevation range in Panama. Hertz, Lotzkat, and Köhler, 2013, Check List, 9: 83–91, provided range extensions in Panama and discussed the range. Köhler, 2011, Amph. Cent. Am.: 40–69, compared this species with others from Central America and provided a map and photograph. Raffaëlli, 2022, Salamanders & Newts of the World: 663–665, provided an account summarizing systematics, life history, population status, and distribution (including a polygon map).
