Bolitoglossa nicefori Brame and Wake, 1963, Contrib. Sci. Nat. Hist. Mus. Los Angeles Co., 69: 44. Holotype: MLS 4, by original designation, now lost according to Ramírez, Ramírez-Pinilla, and Ortega-Chinchilla, 2012, Cat. Am. Amph. Rept., 883: 1. Type locality: "14 km N. [should be northeast of] San Gil, 1500 meters (4900 feet) elevation, Departamento de Santander, Colombia".

Distribution

Western slope of the Cordillera Oriental, 1400–2400 m elevation, Santander and Norte de Santander departments, likely into Boyacá, Colombia.

In the Bolitoglossa (Eladinea) adspersa group of Parra-Olea, García-París, and Wake, 2004, Biol. J. Linn. Soc., 81: 336. Ramírez, Ramírez-Pinilla, and Ortega-Chinchilla, 2012, Cat. Am. Amph. Rept., 883: 1-3, provided an account. Raffaëlli, 2013, Urodeles du Monde, 2nd ed.: 326, provided a brief account, photograph, and range map. Ortega-Chinchilla, 2019, Catal. Anf. Rept. Colombia, Medellín, 5: 1–6, provided a detailed account for the species. Raffaëlli, 2022, Salamanders & Newts of the World: 710, provided an account summarizing systematics , life history, population status, and distribution (including a polygon map and reference to a Boyacá population).
