Bolitoglossa (Eladinea) sombra Hanken, Wake, and Savage, 2005, Copeia, 2005: 234. Holotype: MVZ 225872, by original designation. Type locality: "Costa Rica, Prov. Puntarenas, from aqueduct trail, along Río Coton, below Las Tablas, 8° 56.6′ N, 82° 45.0′ W, 1760 m elevation".

Confused with Bolitoglossa nigrescens previous to its description, and in the Bolitoglossa (Eladinea) schizodactyla group according to the original publication. Hertz, Lotzkat, Stadler, Hamad, Carrizo, and Köhler, 2011, Herpetol. Rev., 42: 248, provided a record from the Pacific slopes of Cerro Pando, Chiriquí, Panama, near the Costa Rican border Köhler, 2011, Amph. Cent. Am.: 40–69, compared this species with others from Central America and provided a map and photograph. Hertz, Lotzkat, Stadler, Hamad, Carrizo, and Köhler, 2011, Herpetol. Rev., 42: 248, reported the species from Jurutungo, Chiriquí Province, Panama. Raffaëlli, 2013, Urodeles du Monde, 2nd ed.: 328, provided a brief account, photograph, and range map. Raffaëlli, 2022, Salamanders & Newts of the World: 699–700, provided an account summarizing systematics, life history, population status, and distribution (including a polygon map).
