Type locality: "7.0 km by road SW San Juan Ixcoy, Huehuetenango, Guatemala, at 2750 m elevation (15.570678° N, 91.441228° W)".

Sierra de Cuchumatanes and Montañas del Cuilco in Huehuetenango and El Quiché, Guatemala, 1980 to 3220 m elevation.

The sister taxon of Bolitoglossa hartwegi according to the original publication. Köhler, 2011, Amph. Cent. Am.: 40–69, compared this species with others from Central America and provided a map and photograph. Raffaëlli, 2013, Urodeles du Monde, 2nd ed.: 317, provided a brief account, photograph, and map.(Raffaëlli, 2022, Salamanders & Newts of the World: 676–677, provided an account summarizing systematics, life history, population status, and distribution (including a polygon map).
