Cryptotriton sierraminensis Vásquez-Almazán, Rovito, Good, and Wake, 2009, Copeia, 2009: 314. Holotype: MVZ 257801, by original designation. Type locality: "Guatemala, Departamento de Zacapa, Sierra de las Minas, Municipio Rio Hondo, Finca Planada de Margot, 18.7 km (by road) from CA-9 at Aldea Las Pozas (km 143.5), 15°10′12″N, 89°30′52″W (WGS84 datum), 1720 m".

Cloud forests of the Sierra de las Minas, Departamento de Zacapa, eastern Guatemala, 1700–2200 m elevation.

The sister taxon of Cryptotriton veraepacis according to the original publication. Köhler, 2011, Amph. Cent. Am.: 70–72, compared this species with others from Central America and provided a map and photograph. Raffaëlli, 2013, Urodeles du Monde, 2nd ed.: 361, provided a brief account, photograph, and range map. Raffaëlli, 2022, Salamanders & Newts of the World: 835–836, provided an account summarizing systematics, life history, population status, and distribution (including a polygon map).
