Known only from the type locality (vicinity of Fuding, Fujian Province, China, 718 m elevation).

The sister-taxon of Cynops orientalis according to the original publication. Fei, Ye, and Jiang, 2012, Colored Atlas Chinese Amph. Distr.: 123, provided an account, photographs, and map. Sparreboom, 2014, Salamanders Old World: 188–189, reviewed the biology, characteristics, distribution, reproduction, and conservation of the species. Fei and Ye, 2016, Amph. China, 1: 401–403, provided an account, photograph, an range map and note that this is a member of the Cynops cyanurus group. Raffaëlli, 2022, Salamanders & Newts of the World: 435–436, provided an account, summarizing systematics, life history, population status, and distribution (including a polygon map).
