Extreme southern Henan, southwestern Anhui (in the Dabie Mountains)and west into southeastern Hubei, China.

Elevated from consideration as a subspecies of Hypselotriton orientalis by Jiang, Yang, Zhao, He, Pan, Huang, Raffaëlli, and Chen, 2026, ZooKeys, 1278: 163–179, on the basis of genetic distance (ND2, mtDNA). Literature of Hypselotriton orientalis prior to 2026 may also refer to this species. Fei, Ye, and Jiang, 2012, Colored Atlas Chinese Amph. Distr.: 124–125, provided an account (as Cynops orientalis qianshan), photographs, and map. Raffaëlli, 2013, Urodeles du Monde, 2nd ed.: 156, provided a brief account (as Hypselotriton orientalis qianshan), photographs, and range map. Shen, 2014, Fauna Hunan, Amph.: 83–88, provided an account (as Cynops orientalis) for Hunan, China. Fei and Ye, 2016, Amph.
