Comment

Fei, Ye, Huang, Jiang, and Xie, 2005, in Fei et al. (eds.), Illust. Key Chinese Amph.: 48, compared the subspecies Cynops cyanurus cyanurus (now Hypselotriton cyanurus) and Cynops cyanurus chuxiongensis (now part of Hypselotriton yunnanensis). Yang, 2008, in Yang and Rao (ed.), Amph. Rept. Yunnan: 20, provided a brief account for Yunnan, China (as Cynops cyanurus). Fei and Ye, 2016, Amph. China, 1: 398–401, provided an account of their Cynops cyanurus chuxiongensis, photograph, and range map, noted that this is a member of the Cynops cyanurus group, and argued that because the manuscript was received by the publisher prior to the appearance of Cynops cyanurus yunnanensis that chuxiongensis should be the name of priority. However, because it is the date of receipt of the published product by readers and libraries that counts, the name yunnanensis has priority. Cui, Han, Li, Fan, Yang, Yang, Ni, Li, Yao, Xu, Zeng, Li, Sun, Zhang, and Zhang, 2020, MtDNA, Part B, 5: 231–232, discussed the complete mitochondrial genome of nominal Cynops cyanurus chuxiongensisLyu, Qi, Zhang, Dai, and Wang, 2023, Asian Herpetol. Res., 14: 52, questioned the distinctiveness of of Cynops chuxiongensis but noted that its status is unclear. Raffaëlli, 2022, Salamanders & Newts of the World: 429–431, provided accounts (as Hypselotriton puerensis and Hypselotriton yunnanensis) summarizing systematics, life history, population status, and distribution (including a polygon map). Lyu, Qi, Zhang, Dai, and Wang, 2023, Asian Herpetol. Res., 14: 41–53, addressed the systematics of this species and near relatives.
