Comment
Dubois and Raffaëlli, 2009, Alytes, 26: 48, recognized this taxon in order to render a monophyletic Paramesotriton. Gu, Wang, Chen, Tian, and Li, 2012, Zootaxa, 3150: 59-68, recovered a monophyletic Laotriton + Paramesotriton, obviating the need to recognize Laotriton separate from Paramesotriton. Dubois, Ohler, and Pyron, 2021, Megataxa, 5: 408, recovered Laotriton as the sister taxon of Pachytriton. Yuan, Wu, Yan, Murphy, Papenfuss, Wake, Zhang, and Che, 2022, Zool. Res., Kunming, 43: 710, suggested on molecular grounds that Laotriton is the sister taxon of Paramesotriton + Pachytriton. Bernardes and van Schingen-Khan, 2024, Tech. Rep.: 1–66, provided a key to the identification of this taxon from other Asian salamandrids. Shen, Nishikawa, Jiang, Matsui, Rao, Yoshikawa, Tominaga, and Sanamxay, 2024, Zool. Res. Divers. Conserv., 1: 191–200, in their discussion of the phylogenetics, morpholological and molecular evolution, and biogeography of the Asian salamandrids (Cynops, Hypselotriton [though considered part of Cynops], Paramesotriton, Pachytriton, and Laotriton, suggested that the position of Laotriton is unstable and requires additional evidence for firm phylogenetic placement.
