Chthonerpeton tremembe Maciel, Leite, Silva-Leite, Leite, and Cascon, 2015, J. Herpetol., 49: 308. Holotype: MPEG 35526, by original designation. Type locality: "Lagoa do Ferreira, 2° 50′ 59″ S, 41° 48′ 29″ W, elevation 5 m, Municipality of Ilha Grande, State of Piauí, Brazil".
