Herpetol.: 228–234. Given the history of nominal species being found to be composites, these authors also provide a useful table of comparative morphology of the species.
30 December 2014: Removed Huia java from the synonymy of Huia masonii (Ranidae), on the basis of evidence provided by Manthey and Denzer, 2014, Sauria, Berlin, 36: 31–48.
30 December 2014: Added a comment under Xenopus muelleri (Pipidae) extending from the study by Mechkarska, Ahmed, Coquet, Leprince, Jouenne, Vaudry, King, and Conlon, 2011, Peptides, 32: 1502–1508, who suggested on the basis of skin peptide analysis that the West African population of nominal Xenopus muelleri is an unnamed species distinct from Xenopus muelleri and phylogenetically closer to Xenopus borealis.
29 December 2014: Added Paramesotriton qixilingensis (Salamandridae) named by Yuan, Zhao, Jiang, Hou, He, Murphy, and Che, 2014, Asian Herpetol. 29 December 2014: Added Kaloula latidisca (Microhylidae) from northern Peninsular Mayasia, a member of the Kaloula baleata complex. Chan, Grismer, and Brown, 2014, Zootaxa, 3900: 569–580, named the species and provided molecular evidence from Blackburn, Siler, Diesmos, McGuire, Cannatella, and Brown, 2013, Evolution, 67: 2631–2646, that nominal Kaloula baleata is a species complex of which Chan et al. (2014) named the northern Peninsular Malaysia population as Kaloula latidisca, but implied that the populations from a) southern Peninsular Malaysia; b) Borneo; c) Palawan; and d) Sulawesi likely will be found to be be distinct species, with Kaloula baleata sensu stricto restricted to Java.
29 December 2014: Added Kurixalus motokawai (Rhacophoridae) from the Central Highlands of Vietnam, a species very similar to Kurixalus banaensis, and requiring the range verification of the latter. Monogr., 28: 40: 24–45. This paper represents the kind of heavy lifting, rarely celebrated but deeply important, that systematic herpetology needs more of (DRF).

26 December 2014: Added comments relating to the paper by Batista, Hertz, Köhler, Mebert, and Veselý, 2014, Salamandra, 50: 155–171, where they present molecular data for the existence of three lineages in the Pristimantis caryophyllaceus complex (Craugastoridae), one of which bears the name Pristimantis educatoris. While the authors note the deep phylogenetic structure, they also point to confusing morphological variation and on this basis, opt to consider the three lineages, at least parapatric, to form one nominal species and place Pristimantis educatoris in the synonymy of Pristimantis caryophyllaceus. All this represents, however, is a return under new terminology (e.g., "Molecular Operational Taxonomic Units", "Deep Conspecific Lineages") to an older notion of polytypic (e.g., multilineage) species which was found to be an impediment to phylogenetic inquiry. Also, due to the evidentiary confusion in morphology noted by the authors, rather than submerge Pristimantis educatoris, I (DRF) retain it in this catalogue and note that nominal Pristimantis caryophyllaceus remains composed of at least two phylogenetic lineages that represent a paraphyletic assemblage with respect to Pristimantis educatoris.

Aside from the minor nomenclatural issue (which likely will be resolved in the authors' favor once the problematic and unwieldy Megophrys is divided into monophyletic taxa), this paper is a model of good species-level taxonomy.

Ceuthomantidae was placed in synonymy of Craugastoridae as a subfamily and the various species series and species group were redelimited to render a monophyletic taxonomy.
27 June 2014: Beginning to add changes extending from the brachycephaloid monograph by Padial, Grant, and Frost, 2014, Zootaxa, 3825: 1–132, and of course the first thing I noticed is a nomenclatural error that I should have caught months ago, that Ceuthomantinae is the senior name for what we refer to as Pristimantinae. Oh well huh. That is corrected in this catalog and in a published corrigendum in the near future.
16 June to 12 August: Added relevant citations to Fouquette and Dubois, 2014, Checklist N.A. Amph. Rept.. As I went through it I found both errors of mine and of theirs; fortunately the rate in either direction was not huge, although I think they made more errors than what they corrected of mine. But, regardless, these are big projects and errors will propagate and this volume has presented me with the opportunity to find and correct a number of errors in ASW, so I thank the authors for that. However, inasmuch as 95% of this book was more-or-less downloaded directly from ASW, it couldn't have been much of a chore to check what I have put together over the last 34 years. For the differences that remain, well, those are cited in the comments. The authors largely adopted Dubois' heterodox view of both nomenclature and systematics, which will be new for most North Americans should they notice and (particularly in Bufonidae) if they are prepared to accept Dubois' concept of genus which requires substantial paraphyly. They also seem to adopt different species concepts for different groups, for instance they consider Cryptobranchus bishopi to be a subspecies of C. alleganiensis even though substantial evidence points to both bishopi and alleganiensis being species complexes, while in the Desmognathus marmoratus complex they adopt an aggressively phylogenetic concept, while in their taxonomic treatment of Necturus of the Gulf Coast they adopt a nominalist concept and their statements throughout expose substantial misunderstandings of much of current thought in systematics (see their treatment of Pseudotriton montanus for a particularly egregious example). Readers should also understand that this volume ("7th edition") has no formal connection to the previous six editions other than the authors apparently liked the gravitas of the title and hoped it would help drive some level of acceptance of the taxonomy promoted therein. My undertstanding is that the 1st (Stejneger and Barbour, 1917, Check List N. Am. Amph. Rept.), 2nd (Stejneger and Barbour, 1923, Check List N. Am. Amph. Rept., Ed. 2), 3rd (Stejneger and Barbour, 1933, Check List N. Am. Amph. Rept., Ed. 3), 4th (Stejneger and Barbour, 1939, Check List N. Am. Amph. Rept., Ed. 4), and 5th (Stejneger and Barbour, 1943, Bull. Mus. Comp. Zool., 93) editions were all done under the auspices of the Museum of Comparative Zoology, with the 6th (Schmidt, 1953, Check List N. Am. Amph. Rept., Ed. 6) being done under the auspices of the American Society of Ichthyologists and Herpetologists which holds the copyright on the title. That these volumes were decreasingly relevant to the development of herpetology in the United States should be of no surprise to anyone (and a measure of success of the 1st edition) and this volume is certainly an extreme data point on the trend. Indeed, this volume is the kind of effort whose time is long past, as indeed, so was the 6th edition. This volume may be of interest to professional systematists, but I see little information here that is not available freely and more currently online from ASW, the SSAR/HL/ASIH standard common names list, the IUCN Redlist, and AmphibiaWeb. Print is simply dead for these kind of compendia.
