Comment

The phylogenetic placement of this taxon was discussed  by Tu, Yang, Liang, and Zhang, 2018, Mol. Phylogenet. Evol., 126: 90, in their study of microhylid molecular phylogenetics, finding it either the sister taxon of all other microhylids or the sister of Gastrophryninae, but surprisingly finding these results to be inconsistent with recognizing the subfamily. Fouquet, Leblanc, Framit, Réjaud, Rodrigues, Castroviejo-Fisher, Peloso, Prates, Manzi, Suescun, Baroni, Moraes, Recoder, Marques-Souza, Vechio, Camacho, Ghellere, Rojas-Runjaic, Gagliardi-Urrutia, Carvalho, Gordo, Menin, Kok, Hrbek, Werneck, Crawford, Ron, Mueses-Cisneros, Rojas-Zamora, Pavan, Simões, Ernst, and Fabre, 2021, Biol. J. Linn. Soc., 132: 233–256, provided molecular evidence for the paraphyly of Microhylinae with respect to Adelastinae + Otophryninae, and suggested that Adelastinae, containing only Adelastes, might mean that it communication would be better served by including Adelastes in Otophryninae.
