Leptopelis mtoewaate Portillo and Greenbaum, 2014, J. Herpetol., 48: 396. Holotype: UTEP 20566, by original designation. Type locality: "Kalundu, South Kivu Province, DRC, 3.155528S, 28.421088E (datum, WGS84), elevation 1,482 m".

Distribution

Currently known only from the Itombwe Plateau (1451 to 1837 m elevation) in the eastern part of the Dem. Rep. Congo and one locality on the western shore of Lake Tanganyika at Baraka (777 m elevation).

Comment

In the Leptopelis modestus complex, together with a currently unnamed species, the sister taxon of Leptopelis modestus sensu stricto, according to the original publication, where external morphology, advertisement call, natural history, and molecular markers were discussed. Portillo, Greenbaum, Menegon, Chifundera, and Dehling, 2015, Mol. Phylogenet. Evol., 82: 75–86, discussed the phylogeography and species boundaries of the species. Channing and Rödel, 2019, Field Guide Frogs & Other Amph. Afr.: 220–221, provided a brief account, photograph, and range map.
