Leptopelis occidentalis Schiøtz, 1967, Spolia Zool. Mus. Haun., 25: 41. Holotype: ZMUC R075598, by original designation. Type locality: "near Tai, Côte d'Ivoire [= Ivory Coast]".

Rainforests of southern Ghana to eastern Liberia and southern Ivory Coast.

Possibly conspecific with Leptopelis boulengeri according to Schiøtz, 1967, Spolia Zool. Mus. Haun., 25: 46. Rödel and Branch, 2002, Salamandra, 38: 258, reported the species for Ivory Coast. World: 618. Schiøtz, 1999, Treefrogs Afr.: 253, provided an account and map. Rödel and Glos, 2019, Zoosyst. Evol., 95: 20, reported this species from the Krahn-Basa Proposed Protected Area in southeastern Liberia and the Foya Proposed Protected Area in western Liberia. Channing and Rödel, 2019, Field Guide Frogs & Other Amph. Afr.: 214–215, provided a brief account, photograph, and range map. Kanga, Kouamé, Zogbass, Gongomin, Agoh, Kouamé, Konan, Adepo-Gourène, Gourène, and Rödel, 2021, Amph. Rept.
