In the Eleutherodactylus melanostictus group, similar to Eleutherodactylus andi, according to the original publication. Removed from a monophyletic Craugastor and from the Eleutherodactylus fitzingeri group by Lynch, 2000, Rev. Acad. Colomb. Cienc. Exact. Fis. Nat., 24: 130. Savage, 2002, Amph. Rept. Costa Rica: 226, included this species in his Eleutherodactylus fitzingeri series, Eleutherodactylus fitzingeri group.
