Type locality: "'West coast of Central America' without more specific locality". Synonymy by Taylor, 1952, Univ. Kansas Sci. Bull., 35: 714; Savage, 1987, Fieldiana, Zool., N.S., 33: 12.

Type locality: "Guapiles, [Cantón de Pococí, Provincia de Limón,] Costa Rica". Savage, 1974, Rev. Biol. Tropical, 22: 92, commented on the type locality. Synonymy by Dunn and Emlen, 1932, Proc. Acad. Nat. Sci. Philadelphia, 84: 21–32; and Savage, 1987, Fieldiana, Zool., N.S., 33: 13.

Evergreen Robber Frog (Frank and Ramus, 1995, Compl. Guide Scient. Common Names Amph. Rept. World: 75).
Distribution
Evergreen forests of the lowlands and premontane slopes of eastern and central Panama (10-850 m), northwestern Panama (10–1450 m), and the lowlands of adjacent extreme southeastern Costa Rica and the premontane zone of northeastern Costa Rica (50–1500m); one record from the lowlands (262 m) of northeastern Costa Rica at Guapiles; likely to be found in southeastern Nicaragua.
Comment
In the Eleutherodactylus gollmeri group of Savage. Removed from the synonymy of Eleutherodactylus guentheri by Cochran, 1955 "1954", Bull. U.S. Natl. Mus., 206: 273. See account by Savage, 1987, Fieldiana, Zool., N.S., 33: 9-14, who noted that earlier records for this species from Nicaragua are based on representatives of Eleutherodactylus noblei or Eleutherodactylus mimus, those from Honduras on Eleutherodactylus chac, Eleutherodactylus laticeps, and Eleutherodactylus rostralis. In the Eleutherodactylus (Craugastor) gollmeri group of Lynch and Duellman, 1997, Univ. Kansas Mus. Nat. Hist. Spec. Publ., 23: 225. See account by Savage, 2002, Amph. Rept. Costa Rica: 245-246, who included this species in his Eleutherodactylus fitzingeri series, Eleutherodactylus gollmeri group. In the Craugastor laticeps species series of Hedges, Duellman, and Heinicke, 2008, Zootaxa, 1737: 38. In the subgenus Craugastor but not assigned to species series by Padial, Grant, and Frost, 2014, Zootaxa, 3825: 123. Ibáñez D., Jaramillo, and Solís, 2012, Zootaxa, 3184: 67-68, reported on the advertisement call. Köhler, 2011, Amph. Cent. Am.: 140–191, provided a key to the genera and species of Brachycephaloidea (= Craugastoridae, Eleutherodactylidae) in Central America and provided maps and photographs of the species, including this one. McCranie, Sunyer, and Martínez-Fonseca, 2019, Rev. Nicaraguense Biodiversidad, 52: 26, suggested the species would be found in southeastern Nicaragua.
