Distribution

Widespread throughout eastern Mexico in high-elevation habitats (1554–2700 m) of Oaxaca, Puebla, Hidalgo, and Veracruz; these habitats span the Sierra Madre Oriental and Sierra Madre del Sur.

Nat., 24: 133–135. In the Craugastor (Craugastormexicanus species series of Padial, Grant, and Frost, 2014, Zootaxa, 3825: 123. Reyes-Velasco, Grünwald, Jones, and Ahumada-Carrillo, 2020, Rev. Latinoam. Herpetol., 3: 61–82, noted an MCZ specimen with likely erroneous collection data from Colima, Mexico. See account by Jameson, Streicher, Manuelli, Head, and Smith, 2022, Herpetol. Monogr., 36: 27–29, who placed this in their Craugastor mexicanus series and redelimited the species, as well as providing descriptive morphology, morphometrics, and molecular markers.
