Eleutherodactylus opimus Savage and Myers, 2002, Am. Mus. Novit., 3357: 34. Holotype: AMNH 87020, by original designation. Type locality: "Quebrada Docordó, about 10 km above junction with Río San Juan, about 100 m elv., Dept. Chocó, Colombia (approx. 4° 34′ N, 77° 03′ W)".

Lowlands and premontane areas from central Panama (east of the Panama Canal) to northwestern Colombia on the Pacific versant, sea level to 1040 m elevation.

In the Eleutherodactylus biporcatus group according to the original publication. In the Craugastor gulosus species series of Hedges, Duellman, and Heinicke, 2008, Zootaxa, 1737: 38. In the Craugastor (Craugastor) punctariolus species series of Padial, Grant, and Frost, 2014, Zootaxa, 3825: 123. Köhler, 2011, Amph. Cent. Am.: 140–191, provided a key to the genera and species of Brachycephaloidea (= Craugastoridae, Eleutherodactylidae) in Central America and provided maps and photographs of the species, including this one.
