Eleutherodactylus rivulus Campbell and Savage, 2000, Herpetol. Monogr., 14: 224. Holotype: UMMZ 90951, by original designation. Type locality: "Samac-Chama Trail on Finca Samac, Alta Verapaz, Guatemala. This site lies inthe 'coffee belt' at about 1250 m . . . Premontane Wet Forest."

Highlands of northern Guatemala including the mountains of Alta Verapaz and the eastern portion of the Sierra de Los Cuchumatanaes in Quiché, 770–1250 m elevation.

In the Eleutherodactylus rugulosus group according to the original publication. In the Craugastor punctariolus species series of Hedges, Duellman, and Heinicke, 2008, Zootaxa, 1737: 42, and of Padial, Grant, and Frost, 2014, Zootaxa, 3825: 123. World: 374. Köhler, 2011, Amph. Cent.
