In the Eleutherodactylus fitzingeri group, possibly nearest to Eleutherodactylus longirostris, according to Lynch and Myers, 1983, Bull. Am. Mus. Nat. Hist., 175: 541. In the Eleutherodactylus (Craugastor) fitzingeri group according to Lynch and Duellman, 1997, Univ. Kansas Mus. Nat. Hist. Spec. Publ., 23: 233. See account by Savage, 2002, Amph. Rept. Costa Rica: 244–245, who included this species in his Eleutherodactylus fitzingeri series, Eleutherodactylus fitzingeri group. In the Craugastor fitzingeri species series, Craugastor fitzingeri species group of Hedges, Duellman, and Heinicke, 2008, Zootaxa, 1737: 37, and of Padial, Grant, and Frost, 2014, Zootaxa, 3825: 122.
