Hylodes latidiscus Boulenger, 1898, Proc. Zool. Soc. London, 1898: 121. Syntypes: BMNH 1947.2.15.66–67 (formerly 1898.4.28.108–109), according to museum records. Type locality: "Cachabé [=Cachabí], a small village [about 10 miles southeast of Concepción] on the river of that name, on the N. W. Coast, in the Prov. Esmeraldas", Ecuador. Lynch and Myers, 1983, Bull. Am. Mus. Nat. Hist., 175: 515, discussed this locality and noted that it is not the same as San Javier de Cachabí.

Distribution

Lowland forests at 169 to 1313 m elevation in northwestern Ecuador (Carchi, Esmeraldas, Imbabura, Pichincha, and Manabí provinces) and western Colombia north to western Antioquia.

Kansas Mus. Nat. Hist. Spec. Publ., 23: 108–110, who placed this in the Eleutherodactylus (Eleutherodactylus) martinicensis series, Eleutherodactylus unistrigatus group. Savage, 2002, Amph. Rept. Costa Rica: 227, placed this species in his Eleutherodactylus martinicensis series, Eleutherodactylus cruentus group. In the Pristimantis (Hypodictyon) ridens species series of Hedges, Duellman, and Heinicke, 2008, Zootaxa, 1737: 114, and in the Pristimantis ridens species group of Padial, Grant, and Frost, 2014, Zootaxa, 3825: 126. Crawford, Cruz, Griffith, Ross, Ibáñez D., Lips, Driskell, Bermingham, and Crump, 2013, Mol. Ecol. Resources, 13: 1005–1018, detected potential cryptic lineages within this taxon. Coloma and Duellman, 2025, Amph. Ecuador. Vol. 3: 210–211, provided an account with photographs which summarized morphological identification, systematics, natural history, distribution (including a dot map for Ecuador), and conservation.
