Known from the surroundings of Celica, Guachanamá and La Tolera, towns in the western Andean slopes of Loja Province in Ecuador, 2101 to 2882 m elevation.

In the Pristimantis (Huicundomantis) phoxocephalus species group according to Páez and Ron, 2019, ZooKeys, 868: 27. Székely, Székely, Ordóñez-Delgado, Armijos-Ojeda, and Vörös, 2021, PLoS One, 16(10: e0258454): 1-24, detailed the advertisement call. Coloma and Duellman, 2025, Amph. Ecuador. Vol. 3: 401–402, provided an account with photographs which summarized morphological identification, systematics, natural history, distribution (including a dot map for Ecuador), and conservation. Coloma and Duellman, 2025, Amph. Ecuador.
