Type locality: "Río Cerranayacu (04° 46′ S, 77° 27′ W, 1200 m), 76 km (by road) NW Rioja, Provincia Rioja, Departamento San Martín, Peru".

In the Eleutherodactylus unistrigatus group according to the original publication. In the Pristimantis (Pristimantis) unistrigatus species group of Hedges, Duellman, and Heinicke, 2008, Zootaxa, 1737: 128. Not assignable to species group according to Padial, Grant, and Frost, 2014, Zootaxa, 3825: 127. See Duellman and Lehr, 2009, Terrest.-breeding Frogs in Peru: 143-145, for brief account. Included in the Pristimantis unistrigatus clade of the Pristimantis unistrigatus group as delimited by Mônico, Koch, Ferrão, Fernandes, Marques, Chaparro, Rodrigues, Lima, and Fouquet, 2024, Mol. Phylogenet. Evol., 108203: 1–19, on molecular grounds (mtDNA and nuDNA genes).
