Pristimantis coronatus Lehr and Duellman, 2007, Salamandra, 43: 166. Holotype: MUSM 24508, by original designation. Type locality: "Campamento Nueva York, Río Blanco (79° 22′ 32.″ S, 04° 54′ 28.2″ W), 2850 m a.s.l., Distrito de Carmen de la Frontera, Provincia de Huancabamba, Departamento de Piura, Peru".

Known only from the type locality (Distrito de Carmen de la Frontera, Provincia de Huancabamba, Departamento de Piura, Peru) at 2850 m in montane cloud foret.

In the Pristimantis unistrigatus group according to the original publication. In the Pristimantis (Pristimantis) unistrigatus species group of Hedges, Duellman, and Heinicke, 2008, Zootaxa, 1737: 128. Not assignable to a species group according to Padial, Grant, and Frost, 2014, Zootaxa, 3825: 127. See Duellman and Lehr, 2009, Terrest.-breeding Frogs in Peru: 165–166, for brief account. Unassigned to species group by Mônico, Koch, Ferrão, Fernandes, Marques, Chaparro, Rodrigues, Lima, and Fouquet, 2024, Mol. Phylogenet. Evol., 108203: 1–19, due to a lack of molecular data.
