Comment
In the Eleutherodactylus fitzingeri group according to the original publication. In the Eleutherodactylus (Eleutherodactylus) conspicillatus series, Eleutherodactylus conspicillatus group according to Lynch and Duellman, 1997, Univ. Kansas Mus. Nat. Hist. Spec. Publ., 23: 221. In the subgenus Pristimantis, but unnassigned to species group by Hedges, Duellman, and Heinicke, 2008, Zootaxa, 1737: 118, and Padial, Grant, and Frost, 2014, Zootaxa, 3825: 127 (as Pristimantis caliginosus). Duellman and Lehr, 2009, Terrest.-breeding Frogs in Peru: 202, provided an account and suggested that because the holotype of Syrrhophus nebulosus is in bad condition that association with a living population is problematic. Redescribed from new material and the advertisement call described by Köhler, Castillo-Urbina, Aguilar-Puntriano, Vences, and Glaw, 2022, Zoosyst. Evol., Berlin, 98: 213–232, who placed it in the Pristimantis conspicillatus species group.
